About Joe Tex
I was born in Newark, New Jersey, on May 17th, 1979. Shortly after, we moved to the South
Florida area, and have been living here ever since.
Bowling was never really a part of my life until I got to High School. In middle school,
I had (along with my friend) a crazy, impossible dream of playing in the NBA. We played
basketball every day, before and after school. Reality shortly sunk in when we hit our freshman
year of High School, where we both failed miserably at our Junior Varsity Men's Basketball
tryout.
Shortly after this, I moved from Coral Springs to Boynton Beach, and joined the Atlantic
High School JROTC program. This turned out to be the absolute perfect program for me, as
I really enjoyed the hard work and discipline that was commanded of the JROTC Cadets.
Being a member of the Atlantic High School Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps
wasn't enough for me. I still really wanted to play a sport in High School. Although I loved
to play basketball (and still do), the Atlantic High season was already in progress, and
closed to any tryouts. I wasn't good at Tennis or Golf, in fact, at that point, I had never
played either. Football was another sport that I really liked to play, but not only was
I too short and probably too slow for it, it's schedule conflicted with that of the JROTC's,
so I didn't even attempt it.
Baseball, Wrestling, Cross Country, Track, and even Band didn't appeal to me at all. So
when I was 14, I didn't get to play a sport in High School.
Then, a few of the "boys" in JROTC went to bowl at AMF Boynton Beach Lanes. I
had only gone bowling a few times before that, and I thought it would be a good opportunity
to hang out with some friends, so I went along. Turned out, AMF Boynton was not even a half-mile
across the street from where I lived in Boynton.
For whatever reason, the minute I picked up that first 10 pound orange house ball, I was
instantly hooked (no pun intended). At that very second, I knew that bowling was going to
be a part of me for the rest of my life. I made damn well sure that it turned out that way,
too. I went out at night without no-one knowing, just to bowl a game or two. I read outdated
books, occasionally watched bowling on ABC, and did everything I could to bowl. I actually
went as far as to fake a relationship with an imaginary girlfriend, just so I'd have one
more excuse to get out of the house and go throw a few games.
After High School, I made one of those "life decisions" you hear about all the
time. By this time, I was already bowling in leagues, and practicing on Monday's and Tuesday's,
whenever I could. I would take the bus to the bowling center, because I couldn't afford
to buy a car yet, let alone go to school. So it was around this time that I decided that
it was bowling, or bust. I 100% dedicated myself to the sport I loved the most.
Fast-Foward to present time. I am now a member of the PBA South Region, and really near
being "there". People often ask what the hell I am doing with myself, and I usually
reply with "something different". The last thing I want to do is work in a 9 to
5 office the rest of my days. I'm way too competitive (and nauseatingly dreamy) for that.
